If you don't know the beautiful abbey of San Vito Martire in Polignano, here we are to your rescue. The Abbey is one of the most magical places in the city, isolated from city traffic and facing the sea, it is a building of Benedictine origin dating back to the tenth century.
Starting from the sixteenth century the Abbey was inhabited by the minor friars and subsequently it became royal property.
It was then sold to the Marquises La Greca, who still handed down the ownership, while in the small church that flanks it, mass is still celebrated every Sunday.
The foundation of the Abbey, overlooking the ancient port, originates in the legend that sees San Vito save a noblewoman from drowning in the Sele river, and then ask her to bring her remains to the Polymnianense castrum.
The arrival of the relics of the saint made the place so prosperous as to push the monks to erect the structure and devote themselves to his veneration.
Over time the Abbey has also been a destination for pilgrimages.
The Baroque forms of the structure in contrast with the Romanesque church and its subsequent fortification, dating back to the sixteenth century and which includes two towers and a boundary wall, but above all the privileged position that stands very close to the sea make this one of the most beautiful in the southern area of Bari.
