Discover the Dune Costiere Regional Natural Park
A corner of paradise just a few steps from you
The Dune Costiere Regional Natural Park occupies a very large area that goes from Torre Canne to Torre San Leonardo, a totally uncontaminated area, which has preserved natural habitats intact, to promote the protection of the environment and its faunal and non-faunal diversity Alone.
Inside the Park there are archaeological sites of considerable importance, including the remains of the Via Traiana, centuries-old olive groves, historic farms and underground oil mills, including the characteristic blades and rock settlements.
In Montalbano the presence of a Dolmen (known as the "table of the paladins") dating back to the Eneolithic is of particular importance. The construction is made up of two load-bearing limestones surmounted by a horizontal slab: it is supposed that it was used for the cult of the dead or for esoteric rites widespread among the Mediterranean populations.
Another important presence within the Park is given by the sanctuaries: there is the Sanctuary of San Biagio, a crypt dating back to the XII century, the Sanctuary of Sant'Oronzo, built in the mid-1600s in a cave which is thought to have sheltered the saint, and the Sanctuary of Santa Maria d'Agnano, which has the remains of a Messapian settlement.
We also want to enhance the methods of traditional culture in respect of the cycles of nature, and promote local production with ancient methods.
In the park, the dunes with their vegetation and stretches of water have remained intact, such as the Morelli river, about 800 meters long: inside the river, fish farming is practiced in a controlled and sustainable way, with the use only of pots and trammel nets, and guided tours are organized in December.
